After graduating, he worked as a business executive in Calcutta and performed in theatre before embarking on a film career.
Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's film Bhuvan Shome. He made his acting debut in the same year with the film Saat Hindustani. However, it was not until 1973 that he achieved stardom with the release of the film Zanjeer. Zanjeer was a landmark film in Hindi cinema, and it established Bachchan as a leading action hero.
Bachchan went on to star in a string of successful action films in the 1970s, including Deewar, Sholay, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and Don. He also starred in several successful romantic films, such as Anand, Amar Prem, and Silsila. Bachchan's dominance in the Indian movie scenario during the 1970s–80s made the French director François Truffaut call it a "one-man industry".
Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri in 1973. They have two children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan-Nanda. Abhishek Bachchan is also a successful actor.
