Shoriful Islam is a Bangladeshi cricketer who plays as a left-arm fast-medium bowler and a left-handed batsman. He made his international debut for the Bangladesh cricket team in March 2021. He was part of the Bangladesh team that won the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Shoriful Islam was born on 3 June 2001 in Lakshmipur, Chattogram, Bangladesh. His father, Dulal Mia, is a farmer and his mother, Nurjahan Begum, is a homemaker. He has two brothers and one sister. He was passionate about cricket since his childhood and idolized Mashrafe Mortaza. He studied at Lakshmipur Government High School and Lakshmipur Government College.
Shoriful Islam is unmarried and has not revealed any details about his affairs or girlfriends. He follows Islam and his hobbies include fishing, playing video games and watching movies. His favourite quote is "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
Shoriful Islam started playing cricket as a batsman but later switched to bowling. He joined the Bangladesh Cricket Board's pace bowling academy in 2015 and impressed the coaches with his speed and accuracy. He played for the Bangladesh under-15 and under-17 teams before making his first-class debut for Chittagong Division in the 2017–18 National Cricket League on 13 October 2017. He made his List A debut for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in the 2017–18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League on 5 February 2018. Shoriful was the joint-leading wicket-taker for Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in the 2017–18 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, with 17 dismissals in 8 matches. Shoriful made his Twenty20 debut for Bangladesh A against Ireland A on 13 August 2018. In November 2019, he was selected to play for the Dhaka Platoon in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League. He made his Twenty20 debut for Dhaka Platoon in the 2019–20 Bangladesh Premier League on 12 December 2019.
Shoriful Islam was named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. In November 2019, he was named in Bangladesh's squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Later the same month he was named in Bangladesh's squad for the men's cricket tournament at the 2019 South Asian Games. The Bangladesh team won the gold medal, after they beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the final. In January 2020, he was named in Bangladesh's Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against Pakistan. The following month, he was named in Bangladesh's Test squad for their one-off match against Zimbabwe . In March 2020, he was named in Bangladesh's T20I squad for their series against Zimbabwe. He made his T20I debut for Bangladesh, against Zimbabwe, on 11 March 2020. In April 2021, Shoriful was named in Bangladesh's preliminary Test squad for their series against Sri Lanka, before being named in the final 15-man squad for the first Test. He made his Test debut on 29 April 2021, for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka. In May 2021, he was named in Bangladesh's One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Sri Lanka. He made his ODI debut for Bangladesh on 25 May 2021, against Sri Lanka. Later the same month, he was named in Bangladesh's Test squad, also for their series against Sri Lanka.
Shoriful Islam has played six ODIs for Bangladesh till date, taking nine wickets at an average of 24.55. His best bowling figures are 4/37 against Sri Lanka in May 2021. He has also scored 16 runs at an average of 8.00 with a highest score of 10 not out.
Shoriful Islam has played nine T20Is for Bangladesh till date, taking ten wickets at an average of 28.70. His best bowling figures are 2/27 against Zimbabwe in March 2020. He has also scored 8 runs at an average of 4.00 with a highest score of 5 not out.
Shoriful Islam has played one Test for Bangladesh till date, taking one wicket at an average of 92.00. His best bowling figures are 1/92 against Sri Lanka in April 2021. He has also scored 10 runs at an average of 5.00 with a highest score of 9.
Shoriful Islam has not captained Bangladesh in any format of the game. He has, however, led Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in domestic cricket and Dhaka Platoon in the BPL.
Shoriful Islam was involved in a heated exchange with Indian batsman Divyansh Saxena during the final of the 2020 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He was also seen celebrating aggressively after dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi. He later apologized for his behaviour and said that it was due to the emotions of the game. [14] [15]
