Conway was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to a South African father and a Zimbabwean mother. He has two older siblings. Conway's father was a keen cricketer, and Conway began playing cricket at a young age. He attended King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, where he played cricket for the school team.
After leaving school, Conway played for the Gauteng cricket team in South Africa. He made his first-class debut for Gauteng in 2010, at the age of 19. Conway played for Gauteng for six seasons, before moving to New Zealand in 2017.
Conway became eligible to play for New Zealand in August 2020. He made his international debut for New Zealand in a T20I match against the West Indies in November 2020. Conway made his ODI debut for New Zealand in the same month, and his Test debut in June 2021.
Conway has played 18 ODIs for New Zealand, scoring 733 runs at an average of 41.60, with three centuries. His highest ODI score is 138.
Conway has played 27 T20Is for New Zealand, scoring 665 runs at an average of 30.23, with one half-century. His highest T20I score is 93*.
Conway has played 13 Tests for New Zealand, scoring 1121 runs at an average of 51.41, with four centuries and five half-centuries. His highest Test score is 200.
Conway has not yet captaincy stints at the international level.

Conway is married to Kim Conway, and they have two children. Conway is a keen golfer and enjoys spending time with his family.
