Ben Stokes is an English international cricketer who is the captain of the England Test team and plays for the England team in ODIs and T20Is. In domestic cricket, he represents Durham and has played in multiple Twenty20 leagues around the world. He was part of the England team that won the 2019 Cricket World Cup and 2022 T20 World Cup.
Stokes was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, on June 4, 1991. His father, Ged Stokes, was a professional rugby league player, and his mother, Deb Stokes, was a netball player. Stokes moved to England with his family when he was 12 years old.
Stokes made his first-class debut for Durham in 2010 at the age of 18. He quickly established himself as one of the most promising young all-rounders in the world. In 2011, he was named the PCA Young Player of the Year.
Stokes made his international debut for England in an ODI against Ireland in 2011. He made his Test debut in 2013 against Australia.
Stokes has played 108 ODIs for England, scoring 3159 runs at an average of 39.49 and taking 74 wickets at an average of 34.05. He is the third-highest run scorer for England in ODIs, behind Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. He is also the fourth-highest wicket-taker for England in ODIs, behind Morgan, James Anderson, and Stuart Broad.
Stokes has played 43 T20Is for England, scoring 585 runs at an average of 36.56 and taking 29 wickets at an average of 29.48. He was named the Player of the Match in the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he scored an unbeaten 52 runs and took 3 wickets.
Stokes has played 97 Tests for England, scoring 6117 runs at an average of 37.60 and taking 179 wickets at an average of 30.82. He is the eighth-highest run scorer for England in Tests, and the tenth-highest wicket-taker. He holds the Test world record for most runs in an innings at number six, scoring 258 against South Africa in 2015-16.
Stokes was appointed vice-captain of the England Test team in 2016. He was named captain of the England Test team in April 2022.
In 2017, Stokes was involved in an affray outside a nightclub in Bristol. He was charged with assault, but he was acquitted in court in 2018.
Stokes is married to Clare Ratcliffe. They have two children together.
