Moeen Ali is an English cricketer who serves as vice-captain for England in limited overs cricket. He played Test cricket for England between 2014 and 2023, when he became only the 16th person to hit 3,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Tests. In domestic cricket he represents Warwickshire, having previously played for Worcestershire. He has also played in multiple Twenty20 leagues, including for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
Moeen was born on 18 June 1987 in Birmingham, England, to Pakistani parents. He has two older brothers, Riyaz and Omar. Moeen started playing cricket at a young age and attended Moseley School, where he was a talented all-rounder.
Moeen made his professional cricket debut for Worcestershire in 2005. He quickly established himself as a valuable member of the team, excelling with both bat and ball. Moeen has played 78 T20Is for England, scoring 1,109 runs at an average of 22.18 and taking 81 wickets at an average of 23.36. He was part of the England team that won the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Moeen played 68 Tests for England, scoring 3,094 runs at an average of 28.01 and taking 200 wickets at an average of 36.62. He was a key member of the England team that won the Ashes in 2015 and 2017.
Moeen has captained England in both ODIs and T20Is. He captained England in 11 ODIs and 14 T20Is.
In 2017, Moeen was involved in a controversy when he was accused of "Islamophobia" by some social media users after he posted a message of support for the Palestinian people during the Gaza conflict. Moeen later denied the allegations and said that he was simply expressing his personal views on a humanitarian issue.
Moeen is married to Firoza Hossain and they have two children together. Moeen is a Muslim and has spoken about the importance of his faith in his life. He is also a vocal advocate for social justice and has spoken out against racism and discrimination.
